Founded in 1972 in New Brunswick, Sanford Bates House is named one of the foremost penologists in the United States who worked for prison reform for many decades and became a founding member of NJAC in 1961. Sanford Bates House was NJAC’s second halfway house dedicated to helping former offenders make the transition from incarceration back into the community and operated in this capacity for over thirty years.
The focus of services shifted in 2005 when Sanford Bates House began serving homeless parolees through the PATH program (Parolee Aftercare and Transitional Housing).
Bates House/PATH provides transitional housing to homeless inmates so they will be eligible for parole. Upon paroling to Bates House/PATH, residents work with professional staff to find permanent housing and employment during their stay at the program. All residents are referred through NJ State Parole.
